CompactDAQ Chassis

Flexibility is key if users want to manage design updates and requests with a single test system. NI CompactDAQ chassis are available in configurations with 1 to 14 module slots, allowing users to choose the exact mix of I/O they need for current and future test applications. The chassis connect to a PC over USB or Ethernet and control the timing, synchronization, and data transfer between C Series I/O modules and the host. Combined with NI C Series modules, CompactDAQ becomes an ideal universal test instrument for teams trying to do more with less, from the benchtop to distributed environments.

Users can complete their systems with NI no-code FlexLogger™ data acquisition software to quickly configure sensors and I/O, set up triggers and alarms, build custom user interfaces, and log data without programming. CompactDAQ also integrates with LabVIEW and other common languages such as Python and C/C++, so channels and modules can be added or reused as needs change, helping teams save time with each new setup while standardizing on a single platform.

Bus Communication: USB vs. Ethernet

• USB CompactDAQ chassis are practical for portable and benchtop measurements because connectivity is easy and ubiquitous. USB 2.0 systems support an aggregate theoretical bandwidth of up to 60 MB/s, while newer USB 3.0 CompactDAQ chassis (such as the cDAQ-9179) provide significantly higher streaming performance for higher channel count or faster measurements. Some chassis can also be powered over USB, simplifying setup for quick, local tests.

• Ethernet CompactDAQ chassis are designed for remote and distributed measurements, particularly when systems must be installed farther from the host PC. Standard Ethernet cabling supports runs up to 100 m (Cat5e/Cat6), enabling placement closer to sensors and easier routing through labs, production lines, and test cells. Ethernet connectivity also supports multi-user access on the network and, on TSN-enabled chassis, deterministic synchronization and closed-loop control across multiple chassis.
