Matched Li-Ion Battery Grading Equipment Solutions for Energy Monitoring

Energy consumption is a concern for all of us Analog Devices is in the forefront of creating efficient, feature rich, low cost power solutions. With an increase in design, production and acceptance of electric and hybrid vehicles, solar PV, energy and wind energy, the use of batteries, specifically Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, is becoming more and important. Li-ion battery production is complicated, precise and requires specialized testing at all stages. ADI has created a Li-ion battery formation and grading equipment solution based on their Analog Front End (AFE) with converter family AD8450/AD8451 and Their Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) controller families of ADP1972 and ADP1974. The ADP1972 is a Buck (step down) or Boost (step up) converter whereas the ADP1974 is bidirectional and synchronous. These parts are specifically designed for battery test and formation applications.

Every Li-ion battery formation solution needs a powerful Microcontroller (MCU) to provide the computing power needed in these types of applications. The ADuC7060/ADuC7061 are 16-bit/32-bit ARM7TDMI® MCUs with Flash/EE Memory with 8 kSPS, 24-bit high performance multi-channel Sigma-Delta (Σ-Δ) Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs). The AD7173/AD7175 are powerful 24-bit ADCs with 8/16 channels for the AD7173 and 2/4 channels for the AD7175. The recommended Digital-to-Analog Converters (DACs) include the 16-bit with Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) families of AD5668/AD5686 and AD5676. The AD5668/AD5676 are both octal and the AD5686 is a quad.

Every Li-ion battery formation solution requires internal management, voltage references and drivers. For voltage references ADI offers the ADR3450/ADR4550 part families. These high accuracy, micro-power and low noise CMOS devices are designed for 5V monitoring. The AduM7223 is 4Amp isolated have bridge driver that uses ADI's iCoupler® technology with dual independent and isolated channels. For power management there are three unique devices to choose from; the ADP2441/ADP7102 and the ADM8829 part families. The ADP2441 is a 36V, 1 A synchronous step down DC-DC regulator. The ADP7102 is a 20V, 300mA low noise CMOS low dropout (LDO) linear regulator. The ADM8829 is a charge-pump voltage inverter that generates a negative supply from a positive input.

The last requirement in a Li-ion battery formation is the need for a multiplexer. ADI offers five multiplexer devices, ADG528/ADG5408/ADG658/ADG1406 and ADG1606. The ADG528 is a 4-channel/8-channel fault protected analog multiplexer. This device uses a series of n-channel, p-channel and n-channel MOSFET structures. ADG5408 is an high voltage latch-up proof 8-channel multiplexer. The ADG658 is a 8-channel CMOS +3/+5 V +-5 V, low voltage multiplexer. Both the ADG1406 and ADG1606 are 16-channel iCMOS® multiplexers for 3.3 V, 5 V and 12 V.
