Les potentiomètres à glissière utilisent un élément résistif et un contact coulissant pour former un diviseur de tension ajustable. Si deux bornes seulement sont utilisées (une extrémité de l'élément et le contact ajustable), le dispositif fonctionne comme une résistance variable ou un rhéostat. Les potentiomètres à glissière sont sélectionnés selon la valeur de résistance de l'élément, la plage de course, le type de montage, la dissipation de puissance, le type d'ajustement et le type d'atténuateur (double, moteur ou standard).
