Les régulateurs de tension linéaires sont utilisés pour fournir une tension de sortie stable présentant une valeur nominale invariable, même sous l'effet de changements du courant de charge, de la tension d'entrée ou de facteurs environnementaux. Leur principe de fonctionnement nécessite que la tension d'entrée soit maintenue au-dessus de la tension de sortie souhaitée dans une certaine mesure. Ils transforment toute tension excessive au niveau de la sortie en chaleur. Même si cela les rend moins efficaces que les régulateurs de tension à découpage pour la plupart des applications, ils conviennent souvent mieux aux applications présentant une sensibilité élevée au bruit.
